Which characters can I use when choosing my domain name?

Regardless of the extension, all domain names must follow the same character rules... You can use letters (abc), numbers (123) and dashes/hyphens (---). Spaces are not allowed and the domain can't begin or end with a dash.

Can I use a domain I already own with my new webhosting?

Yes. You can transfer domain names across to Donhost and then use our web hosting control panel to manage them.

Alternatively, if your domain name supplier allows it, you can use their services to point your domain at your Donhost web hosting.

Back to questions

Is there a limit to the amount of domain names I can use with this webhosting?

There is no limit on the number of domains you can use with our web hosting service. You can control an unlimited number of domains through your control panel.

How do I know which hosting plan is for me?

When picking a website hosting plan, you need to have an idea of what you want to do with your website, plus factor in a bit of room for growth. Is your website large or are you hosting a large number of images and/or videos? If so, you need a package with a larger disk space allocation. Do you expect to receive high volumes of traffic to your website? If so, you need a package that gives you more bandwidth. Do you need CGI, PHP, and MYSQL functionalities? If so, select the plan that includes these features.

Can I register a domain that has recently expired?

In order for an existing domain name to be re-registered by anyone other than the current owner, it must be completely released by the Registry. Unfortunately, at the present time there is not a set schedule for releasing expired domain names. Most domains are released within a few months of their expiration. The best solution is to use our backorder service. As soon as the domain name is released, we will attempt to secure it for you. There is no risk with the backorder service as you only pay if we successfully secure the domain name for you.

Back to questions

What is the cost of registering a domain name?

Each domain name is also subject to an annual maintenance fee which varies depending on the domain/registry (see the registration form for full info). You can use our currency converter to calculate the cost in your home country.

Will I be reminded when it is time to renew my domain name?

You will be sent an email notification 6 months prior and every month after that up until the expiration of your domain name. You will also receive one final notice on the day that your domain name expires. It is important that we are updated about any changes to your admin email address because this is where the notifications are sent. To renew your domain names, simply visit our renewal page and enter your domains.

Back to questions

I forgot to renew my domain, is there anyway I can get it back?

If you have accidentally allowed your domain name to expire, you may still be able to renew it before it is deleted and made available to the public. There is a redemption grace period of 30 days. Please contact us for help in renewing your domain name.

Back to questions

What is the redemption period?

For certain registries, approximately 30 days after a domain name expires it goes into what is called the redemption period. The redemption period lasts for approximately 30 days. During this period the domain name can be redeemed by the original registrant for a fee of $150.00 USD which includes a one year renewal. If the domain name is not redeemed it will be deleted by the registry and made available for registration.

What security measures do you take?

All our servers are housed in secure datacentres (one is an old Bank of England vault!). The hardware is fully protected from physical threats like as fire, floods and theft.

We maintain a stock of spare hardware so we can replace failed equipment quickly. In practice, the multiple levels of redundancy built into our systems mean that we are likely to replace failed hardware with no interruption to your service.

We also perform regular backups of all data on our servers. However, we recommend you keep copies of important data as well.

Can I install my own applications?

Because our web hosting is built on a shared platform (several users share each server), we do not offer root or administrator level access to install your own software.

If you need to use a particular piece of software and have not yet purchased a web hosting package, please contact our sales team on 0845 226 5566.

If you are an existing customer looking to use a specific application, please call our support department on 0870 741 4151. We may be able to accommodate you.

Back to questions

How do I transfer a domain name?

It's easy to transfer your domain name to DomainIt. Simply go to our transfer page and enter the domain names that you wish to transfer.

URL forwarding:What is it and how does it work?

URL Forwarding allows you to redirect or 'point' your domain name to another location. Most often, this is used if you own multiple domain names and want to 'point' them to the same website. It is also useful for websites that use a free website hosting service, but want the convenience of a domain name.

Back to questions

How do I setup URL forwarding?

When you register a domain name with DomainIt, you will receive a free URL forwarding. Once your registration is complete, you will be able to login to your account and setup your website forwarding address. If you would like to setup URL forwarding for a domain name that you already own or would like to setup a cloaked URL forwarding account, please visit our URL forwarding section.
